Living Driftwood（生きた流木）

山の中の川は、
幼い私の遊び場でした。

河原に立つ白い流木は、
根をむき出しにし、
大きく波打つように空へ伸びていました。

枯れているはずなのに、
その姿はあまりにも堂々としていて、
息づいているように見えたのです。

生きることと、
生き続けること。
その境界に立つようなこの木を、
私は描かずにはいられませんでした。

Living Driftwood

The river in the mountains
was my playground as a child.

On the riverbank stood a white piece of driftwood,
its roots exposed,
rising into the air like a great, rolling wave.

Though it should have been dead,
its presence was so commanding
that it seemed to breathe.

To live,
and to continue living.
Standing at the boundary between the two,
I could not help but paint this tree.
